I'm a retired software developer living in Collaroy, Sydney, Australia, where I enjoy the coastal lifestyle with my wife — and occasionally one of our three sons, depending on who's home at the time. My days are filled with photography, walking, exploring maps, and soaking up the beauty of living near the beach.
Photography is one of my favourite pursuits — not just the act of taking photos, but the entire process: planning, shooting, and post-processing. While I'm not particularly focused on publishing my work, I do enjoy sharing it with friends who appreciate the results.
I currently use a mix of cameras, each with its own purpose:
I have a deep interest in historical cartography, particularly old maps of the Snowy Mountains region. I enjoy georeferencing these vintage maps over modern platforms like OpenStreetMap, revealing how landscapes and infrastructure have evolved over time.
One of my favourite projects has been creating a series of 3D maps that trace the history of ski lifts in Australia — combining technical precision with a love of alpine heritage. It’s a rewarding way to blend my software background with visual storytelling and geographic exploration.
I have a long-standing love for the huts of the high country — their stories, their solitude, and their connection to Australia’s alpine past. I’ve taken countless photos of these huts over the years and never tire of visiting them.
I’m proud to be a committee member of the Kosciuszko Huts Association (KHA) and serve as the caretaker of Brooks Hut, helping preserve these historic shelters for future generations. It’s a role that combines my appreciation for history, nature, and community stewardship.
Whether I’m behind the lens, poring over old maps, or hiking into the high country to check on a hut, I find joy in the quiet details — the textures of history, the patterns of nature, and the stories that linger in forgotten places. Retirement has given me the time to explore these passions more deeply, and I feel fortunate to contribute to preserving the landscapes and legacies that have shaped so much of Australia’s alpine heritage.
